Purpose of Position

The Systems Administrator is responsible for effective provisioning, installation, configuration, operation, and maintenance of system hardware, software and its related infrastructure. Participates in technical research and development and will ensure that system hardware, operating systems, software systems, and operational procedures, adhere to organizational values and requirements.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Assists other Information Technology (IT) teammates, as well as non IT department employees, with technical issues and activities. This could include research, sourcing and product trial; technical analysis and design; and support of operations staff in executing, testing and rolling out desired solutions.
  • May also be accountable for the following systems: Linux and Windows systems that support the IT infrastructure; Linux, Windows and Application systems that support Asset Management; Responsibilities on these systems may include engineering and provisioning operations along with maintenance and support, to ensure continual innovation.
  • Deals with a variety of problems and sometimes has to decide which answer is best. Decisions can have a noticeable effect on departmental and or company operations.
  • Maintains the Corporate Internet/Intranet; Local Area Network (LAN) system, servers, printers, personal computers and software. Installs new / rebuild existing servers and configure hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, storage, etc. in accordance with standards and project/operational requirements.
  • Responsible for the technical administration of the LAN to include security, communications, internet/intranet site maintenance, software, applications, license administration, backup services, and initial troubleshooting at the system level.
  • Develops and maintains installation and configuration procedure documentation.
  • Researches and recommends system changes or redesign that may include hardware, software or ancillary items; purchases and Identifies approaches that leverage our resources and provides economies of scale.
  • Researches and recommend innovative, and where possible automated approaches for system administration or other IT related tasks.
  • Performs daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion and integrity of scheduled jobs such as backups.
  • Performs daily backup operations, ensuring all required file systems and system data are successfully backed up to the appropriate media, recovery tapes or disks are created, and media is recycled and sent off site as necessary.
  • Installs approved software and upgrades on the LAN system and Corporate PC’s. Coordinates updates with end users and assists in maintaining the Corporate Help Desk.
  • Creates, changes, and deletes user accounts per request.
  • Provides escalation level support per request, to PC Technicians and other Help Desk personnel, both local and with the FlightSafety International IT team. This may include opening trouble tickets with external vendors for assistance and support.
  • Repairs and recovers from hardware or software failures. Coordinates and communicates with impacted constituencies.
  • Upgrades and configures system software that supports the IT infrastructure applications, or Asset Management applications, per project or operational needs.
  • Administers and maintains end user systems, including desktops, laptops and mobile devices. End user support when required, to include but not limited to; hardware and software “how to”, testing, troubleshooting and diagnosing, leading to resolution to all encountered problems.
  • Travels as required.

Minimum Education

  • Bachelor’s degree, with a technical major highly desired. Actual work experience may be substituted for educational requirements. Network+, Security+ CCNA certification desired.

Minimum Experience

  • Two years of practical network experience or four years without a degree.
  • Three plus years desktop support experience, either onsite or remotely.
  • Meeting of IAT/IAM directive: Network+, Sec+ of other equivalent of IAT2/IAM1, must already be possessed or be attained within 1 year of hire to maintain employment.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Ability to work with a variety of computer users.
  • Solid knowledge of Windows desktop operating systems and Windows Server operating systems (2012 and newer).
  • Firm knowledge of VMWare VSphere, Veeam, BackupExec, HyperV
  • Basic knowledge of Powershell, Microsoft Office Applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook, Sharepoint.
  • Basic knowledge of communications principles, voice and data.
  • Ability to plan, organize and implement varied and complex tasks.
  • Ability to effectively understand instructions in order to develop and achieve a strategic outcome.
  • Good judgment is required, as is dedication to seeing various tasks through to completion, and taking responsibility for successes and failures.

The teammate must have close and distance vision and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
