Purpose of Position
The Income Tax Manager is responsible for the continuous management of FlightSafety International’s income tax reporting for US Federal and state and local taxing jurisdictions as well as oversees and develops a tax accountant to assist with the responsibilities. The Tax Manager, along with the Global Tax Director, assists with the department's coordination efforts with third-party service providers and Berkshire Hathaway to comply with various tax reporting requirements. The tax manager is responsible for the coordination of information gathering to develop sustainable and supportable filings, including but limited to US Federal tax returns, state and local income tax returns, global tax provision to support the US GAAP financial statements, tax estimates and various other filings. In addition, this position assists with monitoring legislative developments, communicating with tax authorities and various other projects, including but not limited to tax research and process improvement.
Tasks and Responsibilities
- Manage the tax compliance process, including overseeing and assisting with the data gathering process and preparation of supporting schedules to provide to third-party service providers to fill out the tax forms, and then subsequently reviewing the prepared tax returns to ensure accuracy.
- Manage and oversee the reconciliation of tax accounts and cash tax payments as well as recording of journal entries to support day-to-day tax accounting activities of FlightSafety’s business.
- Manage (with external service providers) taxing authority controversies to ensure efficient settlements, including but not limited to: federal income tax audits, state and local income tax audits and notice resolution.
- Ensure that organization complies with periodic tax payments, information reporting and other taxing authority requirements.
- Manage the interaction with other Departments within FlightSafety regarding the entry and retrieval of tax data information in FlightSafety’s overall data system; devise and install tax record systems or advise designers of tax guidelines and regulations.
- Assist with the creation of documentation to explain tax data projections to key stakeholders within the company.
- Stay up-to-date with tax legislation and ensure the company's compliance with all tax laws and regulations.
- Participates in tax planning and research projects, and help implement tax planning strategies to minimize tax liabilities and support the company's financial goals, including optimizing the company’s state tax exposures and footprint.
- Assist legal and people team on annual filings, and census surveys that require inputs on company’s financial performance and financial positions.
- Assist with general accounting operations as needed from time to time.
- Assist with the projection of tax accounting data to show the effects and tax implications of proposed strategic decisions made by management according to current and proposed tax changes in rates, laws and regulations.
- Assist with the development of nonstandard reports and statements; i.e., those containing tax forecasts reflecting the interrelations of accounting, cost budgeting or comparable information.
- Oversee and support the coaching, development, and training of tax accountants.
Minimum Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Tax required, Master’s degree in Taxation a plus
Minimum Experience
- 6+ years of relevant tax experience - a mix of public practice at big four firms and industry is strongly preferred.
- CPA preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Experience in the field of taxation required, including experience in the areas of tax compliance, tax controversy and tax research.
- Thorough knowledge of taxation and income tax concepts (Federal, state and local, etc.)
- Working knowledge of ASC 740, FAS 109, FIN48, etc. preferred.
- Experience with preparation and review of federal and multi-state income tax compliance.
- Experience with multi-national companies filing consolidated returns preferred.
- Experience with SAP, or similar accounting system preferred.
- Proven ability to supervise a team of tax professionals.
- Strong verbal and written presentation skills is a must.
- Displayed ability to work in a dynamic and fast paced environment.
- Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Ability to interact with various levels of management in a professional manner.
- Continuous improvement orientation.
- Travel when required.
