Purpose of Position

The Thin Films Coating Specialist/Operator sets up and operates the FVS coating chamber to fabricate coated component parts.  They are responsible for facility/equipment cleanliness, readiness and maintenance and may be assigned additional duties as required.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Able to perform full scope of activities associated with job which include the most difficult aspects.
  • Able to train complex skills and concepts to technicians.
  • Independently performs the internal coating chamber preventative maintenance, including service to the cryogenic pumps, ion sources and electron beam guns.
  • Independently performs the external coating chamber preventative maintenance, including service to the roughing pumps, chiller, compressor, and Alum-a-Lift device.
  • Independently coordinates with the equipment manufactures as needed to perform coating chamber electrical and mechanical emergent maintenance.
  • Can demonstrate a working knowledge of all chamber component system’s theoretical functionality.
  • Can demonstrate a working knowledge of optical thin film coatings as it relates to FVS specific coatings and can make minor adjustments of the FVS coating to maintain specifications.
  • Has an expert level knowledge of the Symphony 36 software and related component software and is able to write and edit material and deposition recipes.
  • Independently performs routine uniformity checks and evaluations on established coatings.
  • Has a general working knowledge of the thin film coating industry, including other coating concepts and equipment.
  • Participates in necessary training including traveling for additional training as required.
  • Overtime as required.
  • Other duties as directed by the Production Manager or Coating Engineer.

Minimum Education

Associates Degree (AS)

Minimum Experience

Associates Degree (AS) in applicable field plus 8 years’ experience in a directly related trade or field or 10 years’ experience in a comparable thin film coating position or in a directly related trade IE: machinist, welder, electrician, equipment mechanic, telecommunication installer, etc.  Or minimum 4 years as a Thin Films Coating Specialist Level II or equivalent combination of education and related experience and inspection to mil-spec and industry best practice specifications and tolerances.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Basic computer skills with Microsoft Office suite and basic knowledge of Symphony 36 software.
  • Basic knowledge of hand tools for fabrication environment operational knowledge of sand blaster, forklift and other hand tools.  Able to use precision measuring equipment applicable to this job.
  • Hands on mechanical and electronic troubleshooting skills; hands on welding, machining, electrical, carpentry or tele-communications trades or non-eyewear optics experience is preferred.
