Purpose of Position

Sets up and operates conventional, Special purpose, and numerical control (NC) machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts.

Tasks and Responsibilities

Measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and reference points on material or workpiece as guides for subsequent machining.

Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, and shapers.

Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.

Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.

Develops layout and plans sequence of operations.

Locates and marks bending and cutting lines onto workpiece.

Hammers, chips, and grinds workpiece to cut, bend, and straighten metal. Preheats workpieces.

Positions, aligns, fits, and welds together parts.

Designs and constructs templates and fixtures.

Verifies conformance of workpiece to specifications.

Fabricates and assembles sheet metal products.

Minimum Education

C (Grade 5) - High school diploma or general education degree (GED); six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

B (Grade 6) - High school diploma or general education degree (GED); two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge and expertise for this level usually results from internal progressive experience.  However, selection for this position is based on the demonstrated ability of the person to successfully fulfill the requirements listed.

A (Grade 8) - High school diploma or general education degree (GED); five years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge and expertise for this level usually results from internal progressive experience.  However, selection for this position is based on the demonstrated ability of the person to successfully fulfill the requirements listed.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

SOFTWARE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Basic computer skills with Microsoft Office, Basic AutoCad, Solidworks and CNC Programming

EQUIPMENT KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers and fax machines. Basic knowledge of hand tools for fabrication environment operational knowledge of drill press, breke, and cut off saws. CNC Water Jet Machine as well as CNC Press Brake Machine (CNC Only).  Able to use precision measuring equipment applicable to this job.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Fluency in English, through both verbal and written communications; Able to read and interpret documents: Able to write routine reports and correspondence:  Able to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Able to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry; Able to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY:

Able to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; Able to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
