REPORTS TO: Program Manager (PM)/Director of Pilot Training (DOT)


The Ground/ Simulator Instructor is responsible for the accomplishment of pilot ground school and ground-based Simulator training conducted for Customers receiving Initial, Recurrent or generic training courses and measures the training progress of Customer(s), objectively and subjectively, within the established curriculum, by performing the following duties:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following duties are essential to the successful and satisfactory performance of this job. Other duties may be assigned.

Teammates based at Learning Centers in the U.S. may be required to perform duties as contract instructors or check airmen which are considered "safety-sensitive" under 14 CFR Parts 121 and/or 135. Those hired into or transferred to safety-sensitive duties will be required to undergo a U.S. Department of Transportation-compliant Pre-employment Drug Screening; and be subject to random drug and alcohol testing as long as they are assigned safety-sensitive duties. FlightSafety Learning Centers provide training and support to Customer and Clients 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Learning Center instructors may be scheduled at varying times and days to support the Customer needs.

NOTE: The term “Program” can refer to the training program in its development, implementation, or evaluation stages.

Training Standards – Program Activities: (Includes Compliance with regulations and guidelines, and Quality Management System (QMS) policies and procedures; plus Lesson Planning, Current Material and Set-up):

• Maintain Instructor qualification in accordance with NOTE on the last page of this Job Description.

• Maintain Instructor qualification in accordance with FlightSafety International’s Quality Maintenance Systems (QMS) processes and procedures. (Refer to QWI-62-02-01)

• Deliver training to FlightSafety International clients in accordance with FlightSafety International Instructor Performance Standards.

• Develop, utilize, maintain and revise ground school lesson plans and Pilot Training publications in accordance with FlightSafety International Instructor Performance Standards.

• Assist in completing and revising ground school syllabi and Expanded Instructor Action Guides (EIAGs)

Training Standards – Instructor Activities: (Includes Compliance with regulations and guidelines, and QMS policies and procedures)

• Prepare classroom and set up training materials no later than 15 minutes prior to scheduled class start time.

• Ensure classroom equipment, flight training devices (FTDs) and scheduled simulators are ready for client training events.

• Integrate Crew Resource Management (CRM)/Human Factors training with technical (procedural) training.

• Utilize Customer's Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Checklists, and Minimum Equipment List (MEL) during training, when requested or required.

• Keep current all certificates, ratings and designations required to perform duties as a Simulator Instructor.

• Deliver training to FlightSafety International clients in accordance with FlightSafety International Instructor Performance Standards.

• Maintain all training material (various media forms) in a current state at all times.

• Provide pre-briefings and post-briefings before and after each Simulator lesson in accordance with FlightSafety International Instructor Performance Standards.

• Prepare the Flight Simulator and/or briefing room no later than 15 minutes prior to the scheduled start of the Simulator lesson and/or pre-briefing session.

• NOTE: Act as Second-in-Command for clients training in multi-crew aircraft who have come to training without a flying partner. In that capacity, will serve as a competent Second-in-Command and will not be performing instructional duties.

• Attend scheduled Instructor meetings.

Documentation/Reports Activities:

• Interact with Simulator Mx technicians concerning all Simulator functions and malfunctions as well as ensure all malfunctions are documented properly using appropriate forms.


• Perform administrative duties relative to training such as preparing for the delivery of training, record keeping, monitoring customer progress, training development and maintenance of training programs.

• Report to the Director of Training (DOT) any Customer training problems (poor performance, Customer/Instructor conflicts, excessive tardiness, etc.).

Daily Responsibilities:

• Maintain FlightSafety International's commitment to Customer satisfaction while performing job duties.

• Adhere to a required work schedule, including prompt and regular attendance.

• Report, on a timely basis, any safety hazards observed in work area, equipment, and/or building to appropriate person(s) for correction.

• Participate in the Quality Management System (QMS) activities at assigned site and adhere to the processes related to accomplishing the site's QMS goals.

• Participate in Learning Center Safety Management Systems (SMS) activities including: supporting and promoting the safety culture, reporting all aviation safety-related issues via the feedback system, and adhering to the processes related to accomplishing SMS goals.

Prioritize workflow on a daily, weekly and monthly basis.

Attend, facilitate and/or research training to increase skills applicable to job position and workplace issues.

Travel in conjunction with assigned duties, if required.

Other duties may be assigned by the Center Manager.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.


Associate's degree (A.A.) from a two-year college or technical school preferred, or three (3) years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience; equivalency years’ experience substitution must be in related field.

Minimum of six (6) months experience in a teaching/training environment, especially where the material is designed for adult (over 18 years old) participants, preferred.

Prior to hiring, the applicant for Flight Instructor (Simulator)/Synthetic Device Instructor must have the following certificates in his/her possession prior to the start of a simulator assignment.

If instructing in a simulator that represents an aircraft requiring a Type Rating, or if instructing in a course of training leading to the issuance of an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) Certificate or an added rating to an ATP Certificate, the person must possess the following:

• Airline Transport Pilot Certificate (ATP or Part 61.159/61.161, or 61.163 experience, as applicable) with appropriate category, class and type ratings, and

• FAA Flight Instructor Certificate (CFI – Certified Flight Instructor) (currency, not required); or

• Ground Instructor Certificate with an instrument rating and an advanced rating (AGII); or

• A rating equivalent to either of the above, issued by another country’s aviation authority; or

• Documented military Flight Instructor training and experience; or

• Documented experience as a pilot instructor in a Part 142, and/or 135/ 121 Air Carrier operations, or another country’s aviation authority; or

• At least one (1) years’ experience as a FlightSafety Maintenance Instructor (This qualification is valid only for teaching Aircraft Systems modules, and requires a waiver from the Regional Director Training Operations.) Other modules may also be approved, on a case-by-case basis.

NOTE: An Instructor may be employed without the required certificates or ratings, but these must be obtained within six (6) months of employment or before training any clients.

After hiring, the Ground Instructor must complete the following:

a) In-Processing and Orientation, as documented in the Instructor Training File (ITF)

b) General and Administrative Training

c) Aircraft-Specific Ground Training

d) Instructional Devices Training

e) Professional Instructor Course (PIC) (see QWI 62-02-01;02)

f) Simulator Observation Training (1.5 hours minimum) GROUND ONLY INSTRUCTOR.

g) Ground School Observation Training

h) Practice instruction

i) Supervised Instruction

j) Instructor Certification/Designation

Valid Driver’s License, where applicable.

1. Reach, exert pressure and manipulate the rudder controls and/or anti-torque with both feet.

2. Reach and manipulate numerous controls within the Simulator device from the Instructor's chair.

3. Enter and exit from the Simulator device via the provided ramp.

4. With relative ease and quickness move between the Instructor station, projector screen and podium while instructing in the classroom.

5. Exit from malfunctioned Simulator while the device is in a severely pitched attitude.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, risk of radiation, and vibration.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
